Spain’s Big Win Redraws the Final Qualifier Round

The European path to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil took a sharp turn on Matchday 5, with major results across the top leagues and several groups still undecided. Spain’s 4-0 victory over England was the headline, but there was also a surprise in Dublin, where the Republic of Ireland beat the Netherlands 3-2 to keep the closing stage under real pressure.

Friday’s main storylines

Spain produced the most convincing performance of the night, overwhelming England and flipping the momentum in Group A3. Germany also stayed on track with a 2-0 win over Norway, France handled Poland by the same score, and Italy responded strongly with a 3-0 result against Serbia. The biggest upset came from Ireland, whose late push and discipline were enough to edge the Netherlands in one of the round’s most notable results.

There were also heavy scoring nights in several lower groups. Switzerland won 6-1 against Malta, Portugal beat Latvia 5-0, Scotland routed Israel 6-0, and Belgium matched that scoreline against Luxembourg. Those results sharpened the picture in League B while making the final matchday even more important for seeding and momentum.

Results across the leagues

League A featured Italy over Serbia, Denmark over Sweden, France over Poland, Ireland over the Netherlands, Iceland over Ukraine, Spain over England, Austria over Slovenia, and Germany over Norway. The standings in those groups are now tightly compressed, especially where a single result on the last day could still alter the top positions.

League B brought a mix of close contests and one-sided wins. Czechia drew Albania, Montenegro drew Wales, Türkiye beat Northern Ireland, Switzerland cruised past Malta, Finland defeated Slovakia, Portugal dominated Latvia, Scotland overwhelmed Israel, and Belgium did the same to Luxembourg. The scale of several victories may matter as much as the points themselves when final rankings are sorted.

League C was quieter in some sections but still produced important movement. Bosnia and Herzegovina drew Lithuania, Estonia beat Liechtenstein, Bulgaria defeated Gibraltar, Croatia edged Kosovo, Hungary got past Azerbaijan, North Macedonia beat Andorra, the Faroe Islands won away to Georgia, Moldova drew Romania, and Armenia drew Kazakhstan. Even where the margins were narrow, the final round now carries clear consequences.

The last group round arrives on Tuesday

Everything now leads to Tuesday 9 June 2026, when the final matchday of group qualifying will decide who goes straight on and who must wait for the play-offs. Several fixtures stand out, especially England against Ukraine and Iceland against Spain, both of which could shape the final order in Group A3 after Spain’s statement win.

Group A2 also remains tense, with France meeting the Republic of Ireland after Ireland’s surprise result against the Dutch. Elsewhere, the final day schedule includes Sweden against Italy, Serbia against Denmark, the Netherlands against Poland, Norway against Austria, Slovenia against Germany, Wales against Czechia, Albania against Montenegro, Northern Ireland against Switzerland, Malta against Türkiye, Finland against Portugal, Latvia against Slovakia, Luxembourg against Belgium, Israel against Scotland, Estonia against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania against Liechtenstein, Croatia against Bulgaria, Gibraltar against Kosovo, Hungary against Andorra, North Macedonia against Azerbaijan, Georgia against Greece, Cyprus against Moldova, and Belarus against Armenia.

What comes after group play

The group phase ends on 9 June, but the race to Brazil will continue for many teams through the play-offs. The draw for those ties is set for 18 June 2026, and the knockout rounds will decide the remaining European places.

The play-off schedule is spread across several windows: the first round runs from 7 to 13 October 2026, the second round follows from 25 November to 5 December 2026, and the inter-confederation play-offs take place in February 2027. The prize at the end is a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, scheduled for 24 June to 25 July 2027, the first Women’s World Cup in South America.

Matchday 5 showed how quickly the picture can change. Spain’s win over England, Ireland’s upset of the Netherlands, and the lopsided scores elsewhere have left the final round with real stakes across multiple groups.
